Part 2 of 2: 10 Things you didn’t know about…

10 Things you didn’t know about First Mate Kristi:

1. She has always dreamed of being a Disney voice over in one of their animated movies.

2. Kristi once had a private backstage tour of Radio City Music Hall in NYC and had a mock audition with one of the rockets & 2 other professional dancers, and passed the audition.

3. If she can’t live on a sailboat she wants to live on a working, self-sustained, organic farm.

4. Kristi was once loaded into one of the cannons at Edinburg Castle in Scotland.

5. She would rather go to the dentist & have her teeth worked on than sit in her office & do paperwork!

6. In fourth grade for “career day” she showed up dressed as an “Artist”, complete with paint pallet, brush, apron and tam.

7. Kristi is bi-lingual. She speaks fluent “Whale” & “Pigeon”.

8. Kristi has trained not only in Classical Ballet, but also, lyrical ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, modern & gymnastics. She was on a completion team for 5+ years and has the gold, silver & bronze awards to show for it.

9.Her favorite polka song is: “Apples, Peaches, Pumpkin pie”

10. Even tho Kristi grew up on boats & the ocean; her first time stepping foot on a sailboat was the day she met Jeff.

Part 1 of 2: 10 Things you didn’t know about…

“10 things you didn’t know about Captain Jeff”

1. He is quite the inventive & creative chef in the kitchen. One of his culinary master pieces is a “Toasted PB&J w/a layer of chips”, yes you heard right, it’s a toasted peanut butter & jelly sandwich with a layer of chips INSIDE (because he likes “crunchy”). Another master piece is a “saltine omlet”, oh yes! Just add broken up saltines to your eggs as they fry and then fold over to form an omelet! Serve with hot sauce! Yeah, we know: he’s a genius! **first mate Kristi rolls eyes** Not to worry folks, these items are not on the charter breakfast menu, but if your a brave soul, you are welcome to request one of his “creations”.

2. He can create a song from anything you say! (it may not be a good song, but a song none the less)

3. For those of you who haven’t known him for over 20 years: The salty captain you see now used to be a fashionista! An deep down he still is, but in a more subtle & centered way.

4. Our sun & warm weather loving captain used to be a ski instructor!!!

5. He’s addicted to YouTube… It’s a good thing he has unlimited data on his cellphone.

6. He once went on a ski lift ride with Clint Eastwood.

7. After some dancing at “The last resort” in the BVI, Walter Cronkite complimented Jeff on his great dancing!

8. He once had over 3000 beer cans, making his collection one of the biggest in New England. Today he has a humble few hundred in his collection.

9. His family had a horse & pony, he enjoyed horse back riding while growing up. (but preferred his mini bike)

10. When singing Karaoke he always sings either an Elvis song, or Barry Manillow!

A Boating must have!

There is one item I couldn’t live with out as long as I’m on a boat… My waterproof bags!!!!!!! We are seasoned sailors here aboard “As You Wish” but accidents still happen, we trip, loose our balance, or it’s rainy out, waves splash, or there is no mistake and I just feel like swimming ashore. Whatever the case I always put my items (wallet & iPhone) in a waterproof bag… because I know that the ONE day I don’t ~ I’m going under!

So what kind do you buy? Well, The company “Sea to Summit” hasn’t steered me wrong yet. Good quality, and as long as you follow their directions and roll it up good it has always kept my items dry! Their called “dry sacks”, Here are a few of the ones they carry, click the pictures to see prices & description (i paid about the same prices buying directly from West Marine) Here they are:

The 4 Liter bag is the perfect size for carrying your wallet, camera, & phone:

The 13 Liter bag you can fit a few more items in, such as a shawl/pashmina, beach sarong or a fold-able hat:

The 20 Liter bag is great for keeping your towel dry:

The key is to fill them no more than 2/3rds of the way, so there is an air pocket inside, so that if it does go over board, it will float!!!

Ziplock bags are OK, but they don’t cut it down here. I use those as “back up” inside my waterproof bags – especially my older bags that have seen a lot of use. Bring your ziplocks but don’t depend solely on them for keeping your stuff dry, especially electronics, although they do help! If you want peace of mind I recommend picking one of these bags I featured above and making it a must pack in your luggage… nice thing about them is they don’t take up a lot of room, Score!

How to get a Deal on Flights

20111111-160512.jpg

How do people get great deals on flights?!…

Now that is an excellent question. Here’s our answer: Good deals on flights are out there!!! You just need to know where to look. Here are some tips:

Tip #1. Go to Travelocity and Sign up for an account with them. Get their “Farewatcher” email updates, this is where Jeff gets his cheap flights! What it is, is when you sign in to Travelocity, and sign up for their “Farewatcher” email you tell them that your interested in a flying from ____(insert your local airport here) to the USVI’s “STT”- St. Thomas Cyril E King Airport, they’ll email you when there is a deal on flights to that location. Sweet & simple.

Tip #2. My parents last season got round trip flights for BOTH of them for $800 total… and they were Direct flights from Boston  to STT, no stops, no Bologna, and only 4hours long. Beautiful! My mom found those by going directly to American’s website and inquiring there.

Tip #3. Is one I found in Timothy Ferriss’ book “The 4 Hour Work Week” one of his many tips is this:

Us Orbitz (www.orbitz.com) and www.kayak.com first. Fix the departure and return dates between Tuesday and Thursday. Then look at prices for alternative departure dates each of three days into the past and each of three days into the future. Using the cheapest departure date, do the sme with the return dates to find the cheapest combination. Check this price against the fares on the website of the airline itself. Then begin bidding on www.priceline.com at 50% of the better of the two, working up in $50 increments until you get a better price or realize it’s not possible.

Tip #4. Check out the airlines baggage fees!!! A lot of airlines charge to check baggage now. If so it’s better to pack light, which we recommend anyway.

Bottoms up!

Rum is the answer what was the question?!…

So here are a few rum filled facts for you that I’ve picked up here in the islands…

Rum served as a form of “currency” throughout history, providing economic aid for the American revolution and underground barter during the US Prohibition era.

A small amount of rum, called a dram, was often added to drinking water barrels aboard ships to kill algae and make the water taste better.

The royal navy issued rum rations to all enlisted men (even those on nuclear submarines!) until 1970.

So, to chase any winter blues away that you may have, here are 7 weeks of rum drinks and pirate facts to make you smile & jeer:

Revisit, Review, Reminisce…

Hello Friends,

Today we invite you to Revisit, Review, and Reminisce about your past charters with us… whether they were in New England or the Virgin Islands, we want to hear about your past cruises with us!!!

So let’s pour a rum punch and pretend we’re sitting in the same room… We’ve had some great laughs!!! We know you loved em, here’s your chance to get future crews excited and geared up for what’s ahead of them!…..

Please leave us a “review” here under the “Comments” button, and please feel free to copy and paste it to our “reviews” tab on our Facebook page!!! We really appreciate it and so do our future cruisers who have never met us…

Gearing Up!

Hello!!!

First Mate Kristi here. For starters, Jeff and I would really like to give a HUGE Thanks to our Friends and Family who have been giving us such incredible support and well wishes as we head off soon for the sunny south! We really appreciate all the love and support that has been given to us!!! Thank You Everybody!!!

Jeff and I are very excited for this up coming season of charters in the USVI. We’ve been very busy getting “As You Wish” ready for her first season in the Caribbean. The renovations are looking really awesome! We have some beautiful bunk beds now in our hallway leading to the aft cabin, and fresh new blue sheets for all guest beds, new linens, new pillows and white cotton blankets! Looking good!!! Pictures soon to come!

Now this next bit of info isn’t as bad as it sounds; Due to crowded anchorages, lines and hassles at customs and the new Homeland Security regulations, we are no longer scheduling BVI charters. Not to fear tho!!! The US Islands are BEAUTIFUL and full of fabulous stops, shops, sites and snorkeling! Not only do we have St. Thomas and the Amazing St. John (which you could easily spend a week snorkeling & swimming on) but we also have St. Croix! And let’s not forget all the islands in between… a lot of which we have not explored with past crews! Such as the famous Buck Island, that has the most beautiful beach in the Virgins. So there’s lots of new sites to see and sun rays to kiss!!!

Also one of our newest additions is our 10′ Sailing Walker Bay… We’re happy to be able to now offer sailing lessons! The fun just never stops here =)

Keep an eye and ear out here on our blog for more updates, favorite recipes, funny stories, pictures and videos! I do get a little camera happy sometimes so future cruisers can expect some candid shots of them having fun to add to their albums 😉

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us and we’d be happy to answer them.

Till next time ~ My your sails be filled and the sun shining upon you…
